The NHL Stanley Cup--It's History

The Stanley cup is one of the most prestigious and hotly contested awards in professional sports. It's history goes back a long way and is most interesting and in fact dates as far back as the year 1892.In that year Lord Stanley who was then the Governor General Of Canada came up with the idea that a challenge cup should be awarded yearly to the champion hockey team in Canada. This would be a trophy which would not be held permanently by any team but would be returned annually by the winning team so that it could be awarded to the next winner. There was no trophy to be played for at that time so Lord Stanley commissioned the making of a silver cup which was 7 i/2 inches high and 11 1/2 inches wide. The cost of the cup was about $50 which was a fair bit of money at that time. The cup had room on the base for the attachment of rings which would have the winning team names engraved on them annually.Lord stanley named two trustees to administer the award and safekeeping of the cup.these were Philip D. Ross and Sheriff John Sweetland of Ottawa,Ontario. Stanley also set up a set of rules and conditions for the annual competition. The winning champions every year must return the stanley Cup to the trustees so that it could be awarded to the next winnimng team. The winner every year would have the date and team name engraved on the silver ring which was fitted to the cup.No team could ever own the cup it was simply a trophy which must always be available for the annual competition. When the trustees resigned or died they would be replaced by new trustees who would carry on the caretaking of the cup.Lord Stanley actually never watched a playoff game and was never there to present the Stanley Cup to the winning team. He had returned to his English estate. However the competition for the Stanley cup has become ever more fierce over the years and what was once a national trophy presented to only a Canadian winning team has now become an international trophy with National Hockey League teams from the United states joining in the competition. Now more than 100 years later the Stanley Cup is one of the most coveted awards in professional sports. The regular season NHL games are watched on TV by millions of fans. When the playoff season comes around fan interest is particularly intense and the competition is followed even more intensely. Relatively few hockey fans know that they can watch the playoffs and the regular season games on their computer screen. They are usually astonished to find out that they can in fact watch thousands of TV channels from all over the world on their computer. This phenomenon known as Satellite TV For PC is absolutely yhe best way to watch professional sports.whether it be hockey, baseball, football, soccer or any other sport you can find just the game you wanted to watch and view it on your monitor. All that is required is to download a simple program from the internet and you are all set to watch any kind of satellite TV program from thousands of channels. It's amazing but true and the cost is so low compared to cable TV that it is a no brainer.Check it out here: http://tinyurl.com/dfh9mg

Dumb Polish Joke?

This is off topic but I just had such a belly laugh that I thought a lot of people would enjoy it.This is a true story by the way.
It seems that the whole Irish police force had been searching all over Ireland for the worst driver in Ireland. All they knew was that he was from Poland and that his address was constantly changing. Every time he was stopped for another traffic violation he had a different address so they were never able to catch up with him. They knew his name which was Kierowca Koncesja but his address was different every time.
One fine day someone who knew the Polish language pointed out that kieowca koncesja translated means DRIVERS LICENCE.
Oh yeah every time a policeman stopped "him" they thought this was his name. Mystery solved there were a lot of Poles with Drivers Licence as their name. Go on laugh. I did.

Watch NHL Games And Stanley Cup On Your Computer

How many times have you been stymied when you want to watch a particulat NHL game on TV? Most hockey fans have had this experience too many times to remember. You can find one or two games available on your cable sevice but not the one you really wanted to watch. Well you can get around this very easily. The thousands of channels available on satellite TV will nearly always enable you to watch any NHL game or in fact any sports event. Whether you are an NHL fan or prefer football you will find it there on Satellite TV during the playing season. Ilove to watch NHL games on TV. Like many others I can't afford to go to see the games live very often. In the golf season I really like to spend a lazy afternoon watching Tiger Woods battle it out against the other top players. In the Nascar season you will find me watching auto racing at its best and most exciting. Don't get me wrong I don't spend all my time watching TV. If you like to do that good for you but I value my health and I make sure I get outdoors for plenty exercise at all times. I don't let my kids become TV fixtures either. No obese kids around this house please. But I do like to sit down in front of my computer and watch my favorite sports when I feel like it. Sit down in front of my computer??? Yes thats right I watch my sports online and it costs me nothing. How can that be you might ask. Well it's pretty simple actually. After checking a lot of the available satellite TV on PC programs which are offered I found that many of them are not that great. The picture quality can be poor or there may be a lot of hangups. But In my search I finally did find a really good program which gives me excellent quality TV on my computer monitor. The picture is sharp and colorful and the reception is just great. It really does have no monthly fee. You can ditch your cable TV which costs you an arm and a leg and is always going up in price. Just pay once to download the software online from the internet and thats it. From then on you have thousands of channels from around the world totally free. I can always find a great NHL game to watch and I can watch the Stanley cup playoff and finals. It doesn't get any better than that. Check it out at http://tinyurl.com/dfh9mg

The National Hockey League And Stanley Cup

During the season each NHL team plays a complex roster of 41 regular season games at home and 41 games away. Each team plays 10 inter conference games(not in their own conference) during the season. This consists of one game played against each team in two of the three divisions of the opposing conference. Every team also plays 40 games against other teams in the opposing conference. This totals four games against each of ten teams. All teams also play 32 games in their own division consisting of eight games against each of the four teams.

Winning a game gains the team 2 points. A loss in a shootout or overtime is worth 1 point. A loss in regulation time is worth no points. The team gaining the most points in its own division during the course of the regular season becomes the division champion.

There are 3 divisions in each conference and the three division champions along with the five next best teams in total points make up the playoff roster for each conference. Hence a total of eight teams from each conference enter the Stanley Cup playoffs.

Two teams play a best of seven series of games in the Stanley Cup playoffs. The losing team is eliminated and the winner of the best of seven games advances to the next round. Overtime periods are played until a winner is decided in the case of a draw at the end of the three regular game periods. Each overtime period is twenty minutes of full team hockey. The first team to score a goal is declared the winner during overtime and the game ends. This is generally referred to as sudden death.

The Stanley Cup playoffs are one of the most popular and most watched spectacles in sports. Millions of fans are glued to their TV sets to watch the intense rivalry leading up to the winning of the coveted Stanley Cup. Relatively few people are aware that they can watch the NHL reguar season games and the playoffs on their computer monitor.
