The Stanley Cup--NHL Champion Trophy

The Stanley Cup was introduced in 1892 by Lord Stanley who was governor general of Canada at that time. Lord stanley commissioned the making of the trophy for annual competition by all Canadian hockey teams.

In the 1910 to 1926 period professional hockey teams from several pro leagues and associations including the NHL competed for this trophy. In the year 1927 the trophy became an annual competition for NHL teams only. The winning NHL team keeps the trophy for one year till the next years winner is crowned and becomes the Stanley Cup holder.

The first winner of the Stanley Cup in the year 1893 was the Montreal Amateur Athletic Association AAA team who became champions of the amateur hockey Association that year. The Stanley Cup was competed for by Canadian NHL teams only till the NHL expanded into the USA.

The competition is now international with teams from Canada and the USA competing for and winning it. The Stanley Cup is the oldest pro sports team trophy in North America. It is also one of the most coveted and hard fought for trophies. When the playoff season comes around all bets are off as every team puts forth maximum effort to keep its place in the playoffs. The outcome of any game is hard to predict as a team which seemed the weaker will sometimes burst out with exceptional play and take the game.

Watching the NHL regular season games on TV is almost a religion for some fans. With the high cost of tickets these days many can afford to go to only a few live games. The Stanley Cup playoffs are watched intently and discussed and analysed endlessly by keen team supporters.

Very few hockey fans realise that it is possible to watch the games on their computer screen. Yes that is correct you can download a simple program from the internet and watch as many as 3000 different Satellite TV channels on your PC at absolutely no cost. Gone are the monthly cablevision bills which are forever increasing. One payment to purchase and download the program on the internet and that is it. No further cost.

There are a number of these programs offered by various companies and they vary greatly in quality. Some are unfortunately not up to par and have poor picture quality with freezes and hangups. There are however some which have excellent picture quality and are a delight to use. We tested a number of these programs and found one in particular which was top notch.
